Red-belted polypores (fomitopsis pinicola) are a type of polypore that grow in conifer forests in the Northen Hemisphere. They are a perennial that is extremely durable, growing additional tubes every year. The genus was circumscribed by Finnish mycologist Petter Karsten in 1881 with Fomitopsis pinicola as the type species. Molecular analysis indicates that Fomitopsis belongs to the antrodia clade, which contains about 70 percent of brown-rot fungi.

It is a major factor in the production of brown rot residues that are a stable soil component in coniferous forest ecosystems. Fomitopsis Pinicola is a brown rot Basidiomycete species commonly collected on dead conifer trees The basidiocarps of the species are perennial and persist for many years producing a new layer of hymenophore every growing season. Fomitopsis, the generic name, means 'similar in appearance to Fomes' (the latter being genus containing Fomes fomentarius, the Hoof Fungus, with which the Red-belted Bracket is sometimes confused.
